March brings new fishing opportunities to the Coastal Bend as Southern Flounder season kicks off. From now through the rest of the year, you can enjoy an abundance of flounder in local waters. Learning a little more about these tasty fish can bring you a nice haul on your next trip on the water!
The largest quantities of flounder will congregate where the water is at a medium level of salinity. But you’ll find this species in everything from the saltiest water to the purest. They often swim parallel to the floor of local bays, burrowing into the sand.
Essentially all the flounder caught in the coastal area are female and can grow to well over twenty inches long. Right now, the females are populating the bays, looking for food after spawning. If you venture out of the coastal area and into the Gulf, you’ll be able to find plenty of smaller, male flounder all year long as well.
