With our strong currents, especially in passes and channels, you’ll need to stay grounded and stable in your footing. Using a shuffling step, sliding your feet sideways, is the best way to do so. It also makes stingrays aware that you’re sharing their space. We have a lot of stingray activity in the area, and they tend to lash out when surprised.

Investing in a sturdy pair of wading books is a necessity, and thick rubber soles will protect against stingrays. They’ll also protect your feet from both natural and man-made debris. Shallow areas good for wading tend to collect a lot of debris.

In addition to your boots, you may want to consider a flotation wading belt. It allows you to attach your gear to your body so you won’t lose things in the water. That can come in handy when the big one bites!
