School is out for the summer and that means more time to spend outdoors with your kids. While theme parks and pools are a ton of fun, there’s something special about taking the kids out for a day of fishing. For starters, it’s much cheaper since there are no entry fees or outrageous food costs, assuming you have some kids fishing equipment available. Even if you don’t, it can be a great investment to create a fun family tradition and make some fun memories.
Kids will need specific gear, especially if they’re pretty young. A small pole with a push-button reel works best, especially when used with a lightweight bobber. This will help them keep an eye out for when they have a bite and will give them something to look out for. As always, when outdoors with kiddos, be sure to pack plenty of sunscreen, bug spray and snacks.
Before you head off on your adventure, make sure you do your homework. Kids have shorter attention spans and typically will get bored waiting around for the fish to bite. A little bit of research to find the more fish dense areas will help keep them interested. If it’s a new spot for you, find out what kind of fish you’ll most likely encounter and bring the appropriate bait.
During the downtime, take advantage of the calm by engaging in some one-on-one conversations. Depending on your child’s age, this is a good time to go over fishing rules and regulations, techniques, and cleaning. But most importantly, remember to have fun!
