Looking for a new fishing challenge that also benefits a good cause? Consider signing up a team for the Texas Shark Rodeo! This ongoing shark fishing tournament, focuses on tagging and collecting date for shark conservation. Teams catch, take a photo, tag, and release the shark and report in.
The Shark Rodeo partners with Texas A&M Harte Research Institute, so you get to have a fun, challenging day on the water, while the Institute gets much needed date to further shark research. Since 2014, The Shark Rodeo has worked toward this important cause. The group issues tags and fin/clip vials to anglers who participate and collects data through their website during the competition season, passing it on to the Institute and maintaining stats for bragging rights.
The current standings for the year are 855 sharks caught, 629 tagged, and 667 fins clipped. Participants agree to “leave no trace” by cleaning up after themselves while fishing, and The Shark Rodeo encourages teams to leave the area cleaner than when they arrived, so all can enjoy fishing. As you’d expect, there are a lot of rules involved, so for more information and to set up your own team, check out their website here.
