Most anglers think that surf fishing is a summer pastime, but surf fishing is actually productive throughout the year in Texas. Many species stick close to the shoreline, especially in warmer winters. Anglers who take advantage of the opportunity will find large quantities of whiting in winter. They average about a pound, but with so many in one area, you can grab a number of them for a nice dinner.

Another fish that makes for great eating is pompano. Their mild flavor goes well with spicy dishes, and the meat is easy to eat straight off the bone. Although pompano frequent the entire coastline, head south to have a better shot at catching them. South Padre Island is a great place to target this fish.

If you’re looking for trophies instead of food, you’ll want to focus on black or red drums. They regularly move along the shoreline, however, the fish you’ll find in winter are larger. These guys truly put up a fight, so if you like a challenge, seek them out. Both take live or dead bait, but make sure your equipment is ready to take them on!
