WHY MUD MAKES FOR GOOD FISHING

Winter is a great time to fish along the Coastal Bend. Not only do you have less competition, but also you’ll find lots of fish just waiting to be caught! One of the best ways to spot these guys is by looking for mud.

Murky water means mud in the bays, and mud provides an excellent resting place for fish. Since fish are cold-blooded, they search for warmth. Mud warms up once cold fronts pass through. This entices fish to burrow down into it. The muddy water also provides cover for bait fish. When the bait fish congregate, they bring prize fish with them.

Putting on waders is the best way to explore the bays right now. As you wade in, if you feel shells in the mud, you know you’ve found a good spot. Texture on the muddy bottom leaves more hiding places for baitfish. When the water is clear, baitfish are open targets. So seek out the muddy water if you want to give yourself a better chance of a good haul!
